Bon Appetit

Welcome to the Dining room! I do wish you could sit down

and visit awhile, for that is my favorite thing to do in this room.

However, this 11’ x 11’ space serves many purposes.

The  6’ wide and almost 7’ tall reproduction Welsh cupboard,

a local find makes a nice focal point. Being a collector of stuff,

it’s been a great place to display my treasures. Not to mention

all the everyday storage it provides. Once stained and now

painted with Annie Sloan Chalk paint this piece takes up a lot

of wall space without taking up the much needed floor space.

The 54” glass top sits on a 29” antique table. The transparency

of the glass creates an illusion of space, yet seats 6 comfortably.

If you’re an Ikea fan, you may have recognized the Ektop

dining chairs and slip covers! Though available in several

colors, I chose white and embellished with pom pom fringe

salvaged from a vintage chenille bedspread (actually I used

Fabri- Tac glue…works great :).

Besides functioning as our only dining space, this table also

serves as a computer desk, mail sorting, craft creating, gift

wrapping table. Another cupboard tucked away in the

corner doubles as storage and provides/hides a small TV.

Another thing worth mentioning about this small space

is the use of color. Notice the walls, ceiling, furniture and

upholstered chairs are all white. The presence of black is

also note worthy. In fact, in every room in our house black

and white will make a playful appearance. More noticeable

in some rooms, than others but definitely there. I’m always

amazed at how light, airy and spacious this room looks

even though its full of furniture.

I’ve also discovered that whenever you fill a room with

white, objects of color grab the eye and become a focal

point. In this particular case, all of the color in the dining

room is gathered onto the shelves of the Welsh cupboard.

Creating a lot of interest and therefore preventing an all

white room from being boring.

Botanical prints, in shades of white and framed in black,

flank the cupboard and complete the wall without feeling

too cluttered. Last but by no means least, is the cone shaped

chandelier that hangs above the table, in the center of the

room. This little jewel is available at Lowes and though

it looks similar to ones sold at Pottery Barn, it is a fraction

of the cost!
